With Covid-19, the organisation had many challenges but that did not stop them from assisting where they could. This year the organisation has many goals and they are in need of sponsorships.

LOH has a team that consists of social workers, counsellors, nurses, recovery coaches, field workers, facilitators, home based caregivers, maintenance team, gardeners, drivers, house mothers and safety officers. They also cater to about 250 beneficiaries.

Linda Roberts who is the funding manager shared some new developments that were made possible last year “We are having the elderly people return to our centre now that the Covid restrictions are more accommodating. We have a room that was recently built for the elderly, they first shared a room with the caretakers but now they will have their own space. They come on a daily basis, they eat here and socialise with each other. They play cards, do puzzles and now we are looking at designing a small corner like a kitchen where they can warm their food and make tea or coffee.”

Roberts added that they are always in need of a lot of non-perishable goods and loaves of bread so that they can feed beneficiaries as well as the residents who come for the feeding scheme. As Easter is the next holiday that the organisation celebrates, they are already trying to get in sponsors to collect easter eggs for the children.

LOH caretakers go out every day to assist beneficiaries who are based at home and they go as far as Lenasia. Roberts shared that they are in need of pepper spray and whistles that they could use in case of any dangerous situations.

“We get some funding from the Department of Social Development but everything else we need to raise funds for. We are looking to expand the hospice; we only have seven beds at the moment but the demand is very high and we do not have the space to have everyone that needs to be here. So, we want to help as many people as possible,” explained Roberts.
