Although MEC Mbali Hlophe couldn’t attend the event, she joined virtually and addressed members of the media. Hlophe said that music plays a major role in our economy.

“Deejaying is not just an instrument of fun, it is business, an avenue for people to be self-sustainable through performing at various gigs such as weddings, parties and even funerals. This programme is very dear to us hence we are expanding on it and wanting to increase on our recruitments so that we can be able to get as many individuals as possible,” Hlophe said.

“We are also focusing particularly on women, because we do feel that there is a need to increase the number of female DJs. The programme has been in the department for many years and we boast about some of the great DJs who are popular today and have made names for themselves, who started where a lot of our DJs are going to be starting today,” she added.

Hlophe said this year’s programme will see prominent names training and mentoring the new cohort of young DJs.

Early this year, the department had posted an ad on their social media platforms looking for aspiring DJs to be part of the programme for the current intake and they will be doing the same in January next year for the next intake, so, be on the lookout for the ad if you are interested. The platform caters for dJs of all genres, Amapiano, Hiphop, House etc.

Upon completion, Djs will receive certificates and equipment to kickstart their deejaying careers and killing it in the industry. The department also provide platforms for them to perform through various events they host such as Youth Day events, Freedom Day events, Heritage Day events etc. where they book both emerging and established artists.
