Rising star Vuyina breaks three-year silence

After setting the SA music scene alight in 2017, not much has been heard of Vuyina. The 22-year-old singer and songwriter is now back with a new EP

R&B devotees will be glad to know that singer-songwriter Vuyina has finally broken her three-year absence from the music stage.

Then 18-year-old Vuyina Sijinga burst into the scene with her debut album titled Journey back in 2017. The seven-track offering did better than predicted and certified her credentials as one of the country’s most promising rising artists. Let You Be You and I Know, in particular, performed immaculately across digital streaming platforms. Things took a turn for the worst the following year with her production team disbanding. She was still able to release the single Call My Name, but that would be the last anyone heard of Vuyina for the next three years.

Like most artists, Vuyina suffered another setback when the Covid-19 pandemic hit SA shores in 2020. Not one to give up easily, the now 22-year-old has found herself a new team and is determined to fulfill her dream. She returns to centre stage with a new single titled Leavin’ U which was released on Friday. “Like its name, the song is basically about leaving a situation or someone that isn’t good for you. So often too many of us have stayed in places or with people when you look back you think ‘I should have left that long ago.’ I think that’s something that resonates with everyone,” Vuyina said. For the new single, she teams up with talented SAMA nominee Ricky Tyler. “Working with Vuyina on this song was a really great experience. Her vulnerability allowed me to open up about mine, I can’t wait for you guys to hear it. Definitely a tune for the lovers and their friends,” the Deja Vu hitmaker said.

The song is part of Vuyina’s The Break Between project which is set for release on December 17. As its name suggests, she speaks about the three-year break from music and touches on some of the challenges she had to overcome. It will act as a prelude to a wider album scheduled to be released in 2022. “Anyone can tell you there is a lot that you learn from the ages of nineteen into your twenties. There is a lot of change, a lot of growth and a lot of maturing. It’s a different sound, a much more grown-up version of me. I’m hoping that when people listen to it, they relate and find comfort in knowing that you’re not alone,” Vuyina said.

Leavin’ U is available across all digital streaming platforms.
