MMC Mfikoe gives back to her former high school

"Once I started the donations, a bug bit me and I just wanted to give more and to give to other schools as well" - MMC Mfikoe.

City of Johannesburg Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance and ICT Matshidiso Mfikoe has donated to her former high school, Progress Comprehensive High school in Pimville. The donation included school shoes, dignity packs and two desktop computers.

“It felt great to be able to go back to the place that made me who I am. It is something that I have always wanted to do. With something in hand and say this is what we want to give back,” she said of the initiative.

The MMC runs what is turning out to be a regular school shoes drive where she collects donations and use them to purchase new school shoes for learners. So far, four schools across Johannesburg have benefited from the initiative.

“Once I started the donations, a bug bit me and I just wanted to give more and to give to other schools as well. The school shoes drive has grown to be very close to my heart. I now know the impact it can have on a learner’s confidence and ability to be comfortable in school. It also eases the burden on parents during such a difficult time. I’m proud to play a positive role in raising our children,” she explained. Mfikoe added that she does not intend to slow down anytime soon.

“Honestly, I want to continue with it. I noted that there is quite a need for it and the need for our learners to get support. I would like to thank all our sponsors who make this possible and the schools that allow us to do this. I also call on everyone to go to their former school and plough back there,” she added.

Mfikoe was also instrumental in the push by the City of Johannesburg to replace damaged mini substations across Soweto, including Rockville and Sun Valley.

“It’s our role to serve the people. We’ve been to Orange Farm, we have been everywhere pushing to find a solution. We are grateful to the Mayor for his engagements with Eskom and are pleased to see that people are getting electricity back. Further, we are pleading with communities to not connect illegally or bridge electricity because it is a burden on the system. Use electricity legally and safely,” she said.
