All Men Soup Kitchen feeds over 200 Pimville kids

The scorching morning sun and a midday thunderstorm could not deter this band of do-gooders from sending a strong message.

When the Kasi Hero Foundation issued a call out for an all men’s soup kitchen day, the call was heeded from as far as Alexandra and Randburg. 12 men abandoned their Saturday schedules and headed to the informal settlement of Pimville Zone 9.

They bought food from their pockets and from what was donated by people across social media. At the stroke of 13:30 pm, without any official announcement, children started queueing at the shelter. They emerged from houses, from shacks and from under bridges. From those that could barely walk to those in school, and to the homeless. In groups of ten, they each received their meal.

The scorching morning sun and a midday thunderstorm could not deter this band of do-gooders from sending a strong message.

“We are saying that the culture of men neglecting children has to fall. We are saying that as men we have to start being positive examples in our communities. Today we are here to serve our community” said Tankiso Moremi, one of the founding members of the Kasi Hero Foundation.

His words resonate deeply, especially in South Africa where 40% of homes were headed by women as of 2019 according to StatsSA. Moremi himself barely makes ends meet, but somehow, he and his team have been able to host this daily soup kitchen for his community for months, relying solely on donations from strangers.

By sunset, over 200 kids and underprivileged residents had been fed. Onions&All restaurant Co-founder, Tshepo Moeti’s experience helped lead proceedings in the kitchen. He said he was thrilled to be a part of it.
“When I heard about this I actually jumped at the opportunity. It’s a good feeling to be able to use your skills to help our communities. To see the kids enjoy the meals we prepared and to have my daughters as well participating, serving the kids was very special for me,” he said.

Despite their extraordinary effort, the Kasi Hero Foundation still receives no formal support. If you would like to help out or sponsor them, get in touch:
