YoungstaCPT shoots back to the top with DDPB collab album

The experience and storytelling ability of rapper YoungstaCPT meets the youthful brilliance of Shaney Jay in the new album Dreams Don't Pay Bills (DDPB).

The experience and storytelling ability of rapper YoungstaCPT meets the new generation brilliance of Shaney Jay in the new album Dreams Don’t Pay Bills (DDPB). YoungstaCPT is one of SA’s hardest hitters in the rap game. The 30-year-old walked away with the Album of the Year award for 3T (Things Take time) and video of the year (Young Van Riebeek) at the 2019 South Africa Music Hip Hop awards.

In the 16 track collaborative album, he teams up with producer Shaney Jay. The album was released on Tuesday. Speaking at the official album launch held in Johannesburg on Monday night, Shaney Jay could barely contain his excitement.

“To be honest I still can’t believe it. I have always been such a big fan of Youngsta, so to actively work with him is incredible,” he said.

Written and worked on in lockdown last year during the covid 19 pandemic, YoungstaCPT admitted that the album was a sign of the times. “I’m an observant person. I noticed a lot of things that were going on at that time, so when the lootings took place, I was writing. When the corruption scandals were flying, I was writing. These are all events that as artists and as a country we should we can never forget because they play a role in where we will end up in 5 or 10 years. So the album is about all those times and what one has to get through to survive those times,” said the Wes-Kaap hitmaker.

While the name Shaney Jay may not sound too familiar, his work certainly does. Jay was behind the hit track Ammo by YoungstaCPT and Shane Eagle. Youngsta was quick to heap praise on the prodigy who is never one to brag.

“You know this wasn’t a case of people who have to know each other for years. This was hearing a song and asking who produced it, hearing another song and asking who made it and another and another- the same name pops up. So this man has an incredible track record for someone you don’t know,” he said of Jay.

DDPB is available on all digital streaming platforms and boasts an impressive string of features that include The Big Hash, Tembipowers and EmileXY. Shaney Jay said the album has something for everyone.
