The wheels to refurbish the disused Orlando East grounds have finally started moving in the right direction. This was confirmed at the unveiling of the official start of a three-month facility rebuilding project in the Sowetan township on Monday. Soweto football legend and former Bafana Bafana captain, Lucas Radebe at the announcement of the Orlando East grounds revamp on Monday.

The initiative is the brainchild of Betway South Africa, Stadium, Management South Africa (SMSA) and the City of Johannesburg (COJ).

“We are happy to resuscitate this facility that has produced a number of sports legends from Soweto.

“As the City of Johannesburg, we greatly appreciate this kind gesture from Betway as it will contribute greatly to the work done by the City of Johannesburg in building and maintaining recreational facilities for our communities,” said the Director of Sport and Recreation at the COJ, Siyanda Mnukwa.

According to Betway, the plan from all stakeholders is to transform the grounds into a multi-sports centre that includes a synthetic football field, a basketball court, and two netball courts which will also serve as five-a-side fields.

“Through our various initiatives, we have successfully demonstrated our commitment to being a caring brand and aiding community sport development. Today marks yet another important milestone in Betway’s continued efforts of positively impacting lives through community sport development.

“The refurbishment of these grounds will, without a doubt, afford aspiring athletes an opportunity to express their talent, in what we’re confident will be a safe and modern recreational facility for the community,” said Betway SA’s Marketing Manager, David Rachidi.

The sports complex will be maintained by SMSA, which is also set to launch the SMSA Training Academy project that will see community members receive accredited training through the academy and be deployed to the complex, providing employment for locals.
