Housebreaking is now a major concern in Protea

Police embark on crime awareness campaign.

Protea Glen police together with the CPF, Youth Crime Desk, chaplains and other stakeholders held a crime awareness campaign on Tuesday.

The campaign focused on GBV, drug abuse, house robberies and road safety. They visited four areas considered to be crime hotspots where a lot of house robberies have been reported. “We receive a lot of GBV cases from Protea South, which are mainly alcohol related. There have also been a lot of reported cases of house robberies in the area,” said Seargent Vincent Mashiteng, Protea police spokesperson.

The campaign then proceeded to Naledi Extension 2 which is also a hotspot for housebreaking, robberies and carjacking. On arrival the team distributed pamphlets and interacted with residents, warming them about crime. Residents were also educated about the importance of reporting crime and any suspicious activities happening in the community.

The next stop was Green Village, next to the clinic. In the area, there has been a rise in reported cases of house robberies, robberies of courier services and furniture trucks and domestic violence. Police and community leaders also noted with concern the issue of drug abuse by young people in the area. A prayer session was held for those who are addicted to drugs and ways to help them were discussed.

The campaign was concluded in Protea Glen Extension 11 which also has a problem of house robberies, according to the police. “Last month alone we had an incident where a police officer was killed during a house robbery while another one was left injured during a house robbery. These were two separate incidents which occurred on the same day,” said Mashiteng. “Residents need always stay alert. We are going towards the festive season and these crimes are expected to rise

Anyone who suspects of any crimes taking place in their area is urged to contact the police on 0800 10111 or call the station on 011 986 9272/9575.
