A much needed fun day for children at Crystal Fountain

After a difficult year in the midst of a global covid-19 pandemic, Crystal Fountain Spiritual Centre held a kids fun day on Friday.

After a difficult year in the midst of a global covid-19 pandemic, the Crystal Fountain Spiritual Centre held a kids fun day on Friday.

Children who were at the event were gifted with hygiene packs that included sanitary towels, roll on, soap and toothpaste among other items. The day also featured indigenous games and sports.

“Since there has been covid-19 and lockdown, they have not had that time (to have fun). We wanted to give kids something to be happy about. It has been a tough year for everyone and we felt it was important to have something like this,” said Project Manager, Muzie Khweswa.

Crystal Fountain, located in Pimville Zone 2, looks after underprivileged children and families affected by HIV/Aids. It receives support from the Department of Social Development and annually receives volunteers from the University of Johannesburg.

“We are so fortunate to have that relationship where we can host University students. We appreciate the extra hands and it’s great for them as well to get the experience before they graduate. They help us a lot,” added Kheswa

With the impact of covid-19 and lockdown regulations, Kheswa admitted that the centre had to change the way they do things, but said the strong relationship between them and parents helped make the transition seamless.

“It was a difficult a period because it arrived so abruptly. We accommodate so many underprivileged kids here and when the number of people who can be in a room had to be changed for social distancing, we also had to adjust. What helped was that we have a great relationship with parents and the community. We used phone calls to communicate throughout, we’d serve children in smaller groups or have a guardian come to collect the meal pack on the sanitary packs. All the work that we have been able to do is a credit to the team we have here and the community at large,” he said.
