Region G Environmental Health Department visits Buhle Day Care in Freedom Park

World Environmental Health Day saw many environmental health practitioners creating awareness on the environment, chemical safety and waste management.

Region G Environmental Health Department celebrated World Environmental Health Day at Buhle Day Care in Freedom Park.

According to operations manager Gabisile Mbhele, the theme for the day focused on prioritising environmental health for healthier communities in global recovery.

The National theme for World Environmental Day 2021 was; “Environmental health, addresses all the physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person, and all the related factors impacting behaviours. It encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health. It is targeted towards preventing disease and creating health-supportive environments,” explained Mbhele in her statement.

The operations manager also shared that Covid 19 has changed our habits and the way we live. It has also tested the health systems in many countries and has impacted on the livelihoods of many people and destroyed many world economies.

Goals that the Department of Environmental Health had was to interact and educate the Buhle day care in Freedom Park by concentrating on chemical safety. To create awareness on waste management which have a potential effect on human health and on the environment. Share health education on how to wash their hands, and bring awareness on the health services that are offered by the municipality.

“A total of 200 illegal dumping pamphlets were prepared to be distributed. Health education was given to the community of Freedom Park next to Buhle day centre and other passing by. The future generation understood the important of hand wash and the technique of washing hand. They gave a song item and they also empowered that they should not just pick up or eat anything, they need to ask first because some parent they store detergents on soft drink bottles and they need to be careful when they play and even make sure they eat what is right not what is poisonous,” said Mbhele.

The Environmental Health practitioners are pleased that the community of Freedom Park was empowered on waste management.
