Thrilling end to Yasekasi Tournament in Phiri

The Yasekasi Tournament is set to take place in Soweto, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, with each winner set to walk away with a 100k cash prize.

The Yasekasi Soccer Tournament came to a thrilling end on Sunday when 18 Mambas triumphed over Soweto Super United. The tournament started in early September with 32 teams clashing in a knockout format style at the Kgotso Grounds in Phiri. After crunching encounters and an array of talent showcased over a period of three weeks, 18 Mambas and Soweto Super United were the last two teams standing.

The final clash kicked off on a cautious start with both sides failing to make an impression. Soweto Super United drew first blood late in the first half with a well-played team goal. 18 Mambas piled on the pressure and were finally rewarded late in the second half with a goal of their own to set things square.

The game subsequently had to be decided through a penalty shoot-out, which ended 4-3 to Mambas. The final day of the tournament was also attended by Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Mbali Hlophe.

“It’s important for us to support community games. This is where development takes place. This is where your stars of tomorrow come alive, whether it be school sports or community sorts, you want to find your next star, this is where you go. We also really want to work together with PSL teams to ask them to come to these tournaments and scout the young talent that is here,” Hlophe said.

The Yasekasi tournament was organised by the Izingapro Sports Management in partnership with local side, Movers FC. It is set to take place in Soweto, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, with each winner set to walk away with a 100k cash prize.

Speaking for Izingapro, Marketing Manager Mbalenhle Ngema said the aim of the tournament is to promote and prosper local talent.

“Our aim is to honour and develop the football at a Kasi Level. What we noted in planning the tournament is that bigger clubs would take a player from a local club and the club would not get anything, hence the R100 000 prize to the winner. We also aim to identify talent from these tournaments and move with it until international level,” Ngema said.

Other winners included 18 Mambas’ Nhlonipho Dlamini who won Player of The Tournament, Magadla Wewe of Glenharvie FC who scooped the Top Scorer award and Soweto Super United’s Promise Ella who took home the Coach of The Tournament award.
