Empowered little ladies take the crowns at the Miss Klipspruit West pageant

Klipspruit West Angels present their annual pageant in hopes of empowering young girls in the community to be better versions of themselves.

Klipspruit West Angels presented the Miss Klipspruit West pageant which is just one of the arms of their organisation. The first arm that Klipspruit West Angels formed is the drum majorettes, second is the netball team and third is the pageant.

For the last three years, the organisation has been working towards empowering the young girls in the community.

Varity Oliphant who is from Klipspruit West Angels shared: “Our aim is to empower the young girls in our community. We are all well aware of the fact that all pageants whether it’s the biggest to the smallest ones launched, these pageants are a launching pad for our young girls. It helps builds their confidence, it gives them purpose, it teaches them how they should conduct themselves as young ladies. In our communities, these are not thing that are spoken about, our young girls are not even taught these important things at home.”

“We want to show our girls how special they are. Our community has a lot of drugs, and you see a lot of teenage pregnancies, this pageant has helped the girls learn how to value themselves. Our pageant is not just about beauty but it is one to build them and give them a purpose.”

The pageant had two divisions, the junior’s division ran from age 2 until 12 years old and the seniors from 13 to 18 years old.

Laylin Daniels (16) took the crown in the senior’s division with Yuchan Mayburg (18) as first princess and Vinchanziyola Wilson (16) as the second princess.  Beyonique Smith (9) took the crown in the junior’s category with Cataleya Lincoln (5) and Kay Jordan (7) being crowned first and second princesses respectively.

The organisation has seen the difference that the pageant makes in the girls lives as the young girls are more active in assisting with projects in the community. Klipspruit West Angels are hoping that their work in the community will encourage many more to also start projects to empower the young ones in the community.
