Hillbrow Flats are still being neglected – Cyril Kuyane

Residents living in the flats in Eldorado Park speak up about their living conditions.

Conditions at the flats in Eldorado Park have for many years been problematic as the infrastructure deteriorates leaving many residents hopeless.

A few months ago, we covered a story about our visit to Hillbrow Flats where many residents had similar issues such as leaking tapes, broken geysers, dangerously exposed electrical cables and mould growing on the bathroom walls. The unemployment rate is very high at these flats and many residents depend on grants to survive, and too often cannot afford to fix anything at their units.

Hillbrow Flats is well known to many politicians who often do oversight visits there during election campaigns.

Unfortunately, even after the oversight visit of political parties, many residents are still left in the same unhealthy and unsafe living conditions. Cyril Kuyane who is the chairperson of the Hillbrow flats shared: “the outside and inside of the flats needs a lot of work. We need a paint job to be done outside. The flood lights are not working, we need a proper security structure like concrete fencing as the palisades are stolen. The insides need paint work too, electrical rewiring, replacements of plugs, new geysers, plumbing, taps, new toilets, baths, tiles and doors.”

Residents shared that they are tired of political parties coming to flats to campaign and make empty promises as it has been happening for many years and nothing get better.

“Leadership in leading parties in charge of the ward neglect our flats. They don’t speak to us; they never deliver on promises. We want a proper communication structure with a service level agreement and deadlines for our issues. We want the leaders of these parties to be held accountable for all their actions,” added Kuyane.

A resident who has been pleased with the progress at their flats is Ensley Britoe who resides at the flats in what many call the ‘Klein 2’. Britoe explained that for the past three years the residents from their flats have been attending meetings, these meetings led to the plan to renovate their flats. The contractors are currently working on the renovations and we as Soweto Urban will be doing an exclusive interview with them soon.
