Soweto talent shines at Heritage Day showdown

Some of the acts that graced the stage included Snap Back Crew, Flame X Ngomdantso, Lowkey the Kids and poetry from Kamogelo Thobejane and Buyi Mangena.

Dancers, singers and poets were just some of the local talent that turned to the heritage day celebration held in Pimville on Friday.

The event saw artists and groups from as far as Meadowlands, Zola and Kliptown gather at the Pimville Community Centre to each showcase their talent and get to mingle with other young artists.

JV Cele, the organiser of the event was aimed at encouraging young people to enjoy their heritage.

“We live in a world today where it is easy for people to forget who they are and where they come. Our culture is almost diluted these days. Today we wanted to take it back to where it started and showcase our own version of art as South Africans,” he said.

“It was an amazing experience to celebrate our heritage in the way that we did, doing what we love. It was also great to be part of the performance on this important day,” he said.

Cele went on to call for more support in the development of local youth talent.

“The performances here have been incredible, I’m blown away by the amount of talent. We need to build on this and consistently proved young people with the platform to grow and showcase their skills. We are asking communities, businesses and organisations to get in touch and work with us in sustaining this. We want to host more events like this one,” he concluded.
