Chiawelo residents block people from entering the voting station

President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses chiawelo residents on electricity issue.

With the past weekend dedicated to mobilising all potential voters to register for the November Local Government Elections, President Cyril Ramaphosa made his way to Chiawelo, where residents had closed down a voting station.

Residents were saying that no one will register to vote as long as they still don’t have electricity.

While long queues of young people were expected at polling stations, they gathered to listen to the president and raised their concerns regarding service delivery. ‘No electricity no votes’ was the chant as scores of young people expressed their frustration over poor service delivery in their area.

“I do not condone what the residents did by blocking people from entering the voting station. I believe that by us voting we then have a say on how we want to be governed. I however understand the frustrations of not having electricity,” said Sifiso Mhlanga, one of the resident. Mhlanga added that is important to elect young leaders who have the best interest of the community at heart.

Another resident, Precious Phaweni confronted President Ramaphosa and told him that she will not vote because she has not seen any changes in her community. She went on to say that politicians only visit their area when they need votes.

“I will only vote once I see a change in my community. We want jobs and electricity, until that is done then there’s no vote from me. We demand service delivery, that’s all we are asking for, proper service delivery,” said an angry Phaweni.
