Premier Makhura commented that various crimes have been on the rise in the province since the pandemic and lockdown.

Operation Okae Molao is one of the ways government has been trying to use in the fight against crime in the province.

More than 800 people were arrested under the operation since Wednesday night according to Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela.

MEC Mazibuko said the operation was not meant to scare residents but it is aimed at ensuring their safety and fight crime.

The operation also moved to Braamfischer, a hotspot for illegal mining operations.

Illegal mining equipment and looted goods were confiscated by the police.
