Environmental Health brings awareness to Lakeview

: The importance of waste management, vector control and chemical safety was emphasized at the awareness campaign in Ennerdale.

The Department of Environmental Health’s Vector Control team of Region G held a waste management, vector control and chemical safety awareness campaign.

The campaign took place in Ennerdale, extension 4 which is better known to locals as Lakeview Informal Settlement.

According to Vector Control Operator; Gladys Tobias, for the past few months Ennerdale Ext 4 residents have been experiencing problems like burning shack, smoke inhalation from brazier (Imbaula), drowning, electrocutions from illegal connection, no removal of refuse, water and sanitation issues, children been bumped by vehicles when crossing the main roads going to school and many other health-related issues.

“The campaign was a success as vector control gave an educational talk on waste management and chemical safety and will continue with pest control services. Emergency Management Services (EMS) is going to partner with the community and train them on first aid and general firefighting measures. Part of the plan is to get Johannesburg Metro Police Department involved in the campaign so that they can train a few unemployed community members to marshal the kids in the mornings and afternoons to cross the roads. Urban inspectors are going to forward the service delivery challenges found on site to the relevant departments and Vector control will continue to do pest control in the area,” said Tobias.

The following stakeholders and their representatives were part of the event, City of Joburg Emergency Services; Gugu Manana and her team, Urban Inspector Christelle Solomon, Primary Health (Health Promoter Sister Joy Kapok) and Environmental Health Practitioner Thabo Silwana and Vector Control Operators (Gladys Tobias and her team).

The team behind the campaign hope that the outcomes of the event was successful and helpful to residents from the informal settlement.
