Yet another hit for Rethabile Khumalo

With summer anthem and platinum-selling, Ntyilo Ntyilo under her belt and a feature on Song of Year, Umlilo, Protea Glen’s own Rethabile Khumalo has established herself as a certified hit-maker. The 25-year-old songstress, though, is not resting on laurels and is back with another hit single titled “Ikusasa Lam” in which she teamed up Lenzo and songwriter, Melusi Msimango.

“The song is from life experience back then. We sat down with Melusi and the team and just drew back from some of those experiences to create this song,” she said.

Ikusasa Lam touches on the subject of resilience and overcoming critics.

“If you find yourself in a similar situation, where maybe a friend or even a random person doesn’t wish you well or doesn’t believe in you. I just want you to know that things change. I am a living testimony, look at my experiences: I did Idols, they said ‘no’ and I eventually went back as Rethabile and not as a contestant,” added Khumalo.

Since those days, Rethabile has grown from strength to strength. Ikusasa Lam debuted on August 13 and carries her the signature gospel-house sound her fans have come to know her for. She insisted, though, that she wanted to try as many different sounds as possible.

“Personally I try not to limit myself to a specific sound. Times change, look at the growth of Amapiano. So you should never label yourself as this or that and just be open to trying new things.”

The Ikusasa Lam single is part of Rathabile’s 4-track EP titled Inkemba, a title the singer said was the sign of the times.

“With the impact of Covid-19 and everything that has happed, the many people we have lost, not just artists but friends and family. That’s how we came up with the name Inkemba and the EP is mostly about the changes we have faced. It also speaks about hope, that we should not lose our spirit. Just believe that things will be okay,” she told Soweto Urban.

Rethabile Khumalo’s Inkemba EP is available on all streaming platforms while the Ikusasa Lam music video is out on Youtube.
