Freedom Park a hotspot for violent crimes – SAPS

Eldorado Park SAPS encourages residents to become informants in order to ensure that more arrests and convictions of offenders are made.

“Violent crimes, especially murders and attempted murders are unacceptably high within the Freedom Park precinct, despite the increased police visibility and awareness campaigns conducted within the sector,” said Constable Roxanne Gibb in a statement.

According to the communications officer, the higher rates of murders and violent crimes are usually due to illegal firearms and dangerous weapons carried by offenders who have either witnessed or suffered from domestic violence, and who believe that violent ways of life are acceptable.

“The identified contributing factors are namely the failure to break the silence and expose the perpetrators committing these violent crimes. By speaking up you could be saving lives. The community is encouraged to report activities of violence or where illegal firearms are being kept and known, wanted suspects,” added Gibb.

The Eldorado Park SAPS has established both short term solutions and long-term goals, with the inclusion of the various stakeholders. The integrated operations and awareness campaigns planned by the SAPS Eldorado Park, with the other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders include that of numerous awareness campaigns and constant stop and searches which will be targeted at addressing the root causes of violence.

Eldorado Park SAPS also appeals to community members who are currently interested in registering as informants to urgently do as such. Any person with interest in this regard should be in possession of a valid Identity Document (ID).

Gibb shared that the collaboration of the various law enforcement agencies, stakeholders and community members will be within the best interests of the community. Those who are tired of remaining silent, are to take the first steps of becoming actively involved, thus   encouraging the swift reaction and response of the SAPS, in order to ensure the arrests and convictions of the offenders.

Residents are reminded to contact the SAPS Crime Stop Hotline on 08600 10111 or Eldorado Park SAPS on 011 9460300 or 082 444 3001 to report any illegal or suspicious activities.
