Miss SA, Shudufhadzo Musida surprises Faresane learners

On the day of her book her widely anticipated children's book launch, Miss SA 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida decided to surprise learners at the Faresani Primary School in Pimville.

Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida treated learners at Faresani Primary school in Pimville to a surprise visit on Thursday afternoon. Shudu held a read-along session of her new children’s book, Shudu Finds Her Magic, after which she donated copies of the book to the school. The book touches on subjects of bullying, self-esteem and friendship, drawing inspiration from Shudu’s personal experiences when she switched schools as a child.

“I felt like it was quite important for mental health education to be integrated into their education curriculum. It’s important that there are books like these, where we have worked with child psychologists and a range of other specialists to make sure that kids understand the implications of bullying, the importance of speaking up and the power of friendship, love and kindness. I don’t think we have enough of that in our society,” Musida told Soweto Urban.

The school’s principal, Phillipine Masiagwala said the school was honoured to have the reigning Miss South Africa at the school.

“Well, I am speechless, to be honest. We are absolutely privileged to have her here today and launch such an important book. The learners enjoyed the read-along session. I think she is a great role model for the kids and it is great that she is encouraging the culture of reading amongst young learners,” explained Masiagwala.

Musida’s visit was in collaboration with McDonald’s who also donated Happy Meals to learners at the school, as well as the Kasi Hero Foundation, a non-profit organisation that tackles social ills in Soweto. The NPO’s co-founder, Tankiso Moremi said he hoped the initiative would spark future collaborations.

“It certainly means a lot that she took the time to come here herself. It means as much to us as it does to the learners – it’s a big moment. We really enjoyed the experience and the collaboration and we hope it’s not the last. You know we are involved in several initiatives like school shoe donations, so it would be nice to have her on board. But for today I think she’s given everyone here a day to remember,” Moremi said.

Shudu Finds Her Magic hit the book shelves on the same day and is available in six languages: Afrikaans (Shudu Vind Haar Sprankel), English (Shudu Finds Her Magic), Sesotho (Shudu O Sibolla Boikgetho ba hae), TshiVenda (Shudu u wana Vhuolo Hawe), IsiXhosa (uShudu u Fumanisa ukuba UnoMlingo) and IsiZulu (uShudu Uthola Umlingo Wakhe).
