Eldorado Park residents learn about work safety

Twenty-five residents benefit from free courses offered by the NHBRC.

The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) in partnership with the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) provided occupational health and safety training to twenty-five (25) residents from the Eldorado Park community.

Nwabisa Mgxabhayi who is a training officer from NHBRC explained that their training department is mandated to train women in construction, youth, military veterans, people living with disabilities and emerging home builders.

“All the training is free. We provide technical skills training, taking them through the steps and procedures on how to build a house. That training is a duration of three days and then health and safety training which is one day. We also have other accredited training that is given at the colleges so that is brick laying, plastering, construction management, project management and the duration depends on the unit standards that will be covered, it’s usually between 38 and 44 days,” explained Mgxabhayi.

The training has been taking place for the last three years in the community with this being their fourth group. This year the non-profit organisation called AS-U-R are assisting the trainers by ensuring that residents sign up and attend the free course.

“Once they complete this course, they will receive certificates of attendance and then when they complete the accredited courses, they will then receive the accredited SETA certificates with the colleges. We explained to them that the challenges that we currently having is that our memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the college has expired so while we wait for that to be sorted, we decided to prepare them, once the MoU is signed then the students will be able to choose which course they want to do at the college,” added Mgxabhayi.

Mirriam Heyes from AS-U-R said that they wish to continue having this dialog. She further added that the residents are really interested in these courses and the dialog that they are having, keeps classes are full.

“Without the information that we are receiving here, our people are perishing. There are general workers who go with their own personal protective equipment (PPE), there’s people who are sharing boots, our people do not know the basics of health and safety and today we have learnt the better way forward,” added Heyes.

AS-U-R would like to thank NHBRC as well as Busisiwe Tshabalala and Zodwa Seheri from CRUM because she said without them, this training was not going to be possible.
