Local teams called out to knockout tournament

The tournament will use a knockout based format and is expected to kick off on October 30, with the final match between the last two standing teams scheduled for November 7.

Football teams in and around Soweto, Lenesia and Lawley have been called out to be a part of a football tournament to be held at the end of October this year.

The Knockout tournament will see sixteen teams in the under-17 division from in and around Soweto battle it out for first place prizes that include cash, a full football kit, trophies and training equipment for the winners. The runners up though will not walk away empty-handed and are set to also receive prize money and silver medals.

The founder of the tournament, Sibonelo ‘Pastor’ Mtshali said he wanted to use the opportunity to uplift communities in the township as well as unite local coaches and young footballers.

“I spent most of my teenage life in Lawley, I’m aware of the challenges young people in our townships come across. Such tournaments will give them a platform to showcase their talent and give them insights that you can be successful through playing football,” Mtshali said of his initiative.

The tournament will use a knockout based format and is expected to kick off on October 30, with the final match between the last two standing teams scheduled for November 7, in Lawley. In news that may excite young footballers, Mtshali has confirmed that professional football players will also be present on the final day and will be keeping an eye out for talented young players.

Covid-19 regulations such as social distancing, the regular use of hand sanitisers and the wearing of masks will be observed at the tournament. Spaces for teams who wish to participate in the tournament are limited. teams that are interested can get in touch with Sibonelo Mtshali on 060 559 0503.
