SANCA creates awareness on substance abuse

Two hours of entertaining and learning about substance abuse in Eldorado Park.

South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) Eldorado Park had an outreach programme at Go Green in Eldorado Park, extension 8.

The event took place in partnership with the Kliptown Community Policing Forum, the Youth Desk, Eldos FM, and the main stakeholder was African Youth Development Fund (AYDF) with the Department of Social Development.

Zeida Bouwers who is a community development worker for SANCA Eldorado Park explained that the purpose of the event was to create awareness on substance abuse and the disorders that many of the youth in the community are living with.

“Our target was mainly the youth so we thought that it would be a good idea to entertain them with music and also educate them at the same time. We chose to attract the youth with the music because we know how much they love the entertainment so the moment the music started; we could see the youth coming out to see what is happening,” said Bouwers.

Billy Petersen who is the chairperson of the Kliptown Community Policing Forum was one of the speakers at the event and encouraged the youth to make better choices by staying away from drugs, cigarettes and smoking hookah pipes. Since Eldorado Park was announced as the second Covid 19 hotspot in Region G, Petersen also told the youth to wear masks, sanitise and social distance because the virus is real and should be taken seriously.

There was also a social worker at the event and parents along with the youth were encouraged to go see the social worker if they have any issues that they are struggling with, it does not only have to be about substance abuse.

Bouwers added that this event was a pilot project but will be running this programme once a month in the different extensions in Eldorado Park. At the end of the event, those who attended received fruit packs.
