Food and blankets donated to the elderly in Tshepisong

Harmony Gold Mines donated 45 blankets and 45 buckets of dry food to the elderly persons in Tshepisong Phase 7.

Harmony Gold Mines donated 45 blankets and 45 buckets of dry food to the elderly persons in Tshepisong Phase 7 on August 19.

Cllr Sabelo Ngcana, Ward Councillor of Ward 127, graced the occasion and welcoming everyone and the donors for thinking of the elderly people. He further said that he knew the organization for many years while they were operating from a small space.

Dorah Mashita, Regional Manager: Social Development in Region C alluded to the importance of working together. Her department was the one that identified Ikhwezi Congregation Outreach Project after assessing the needs of the organisation and requested the Harmony Gold Mine for assistance.

Ms. Mashita appealed to the elderly people not to store the blankets, they belong to them, are theirs and they should use them and not store them. She further thanked the NGO for seeing the need to assist the senior citizens and catering to their needs.

She also thanked the Citizen Relationship & Urban Management (CRUM) and the colleagues present at the occasion. She also recognized the Ward Councillor as a key role player in the community and working hard to assist the community and advocate for the needy.

Themba Magaga, The Project Manager thanked the donors on behalf of the beneficiaries that the donation will go a long way. Mahadi Letsoisa from Harmony Gold Mines (Corporate Social Investment) stated that they responded to the request, they must plow back to communities.

The Ikhwezi Congregation Outreach Project was established in 2010 by Grace Kenosi Rabotho. The organisation provides services to 140 elderly people within the community of Tshepisong Phase 7, Ward 127. Currently, 7 caregivers are part of the project.

The services are provided as follows:

– Psychosocial support with the help of the City of Johannesburg: Social Development.

– Education and training for caregivers

– Health care support (physical exercise, screening of chronic illnesses, collection of medicines at the clinic)

– Hygiene care, both at home and at the centre. – Provision of healthy and nutritious daily meals – Recreational programmes
