Pimville Post office gets a boost after looting

The post office had suffered from looting last month, and while it was not too badly damaged, important laptops were stolen and there was an air of uncertainty among residents on whether the office could function efficiently.

The Pimville Post Office received a boost in the form of a donation from the Pimville Zone7 Committee on Tuesday.

The post office had suffered from looting last month, and while it was not too badly damaged, important laptops were stolen and there was an air of uncertainty among residents on whether the office could function efficiently.

Fortunately, the Pimville Zone 7 committee decided to help out. 100 chairs, three laptops and food were donated to assist the office and pensioners. Secretary-General of the committee, Karabo Motaung explained the importance of the initiative.

“Fortunately, the post office was not severely looted and that was the outcome of the community saying ‘No to looting’. However, some laptops were stolen and we were able to team up with Soweto Parliament and the community members and decide to contribute to a solution. We want to thank Soweto Parliament, Konka and Rofhiwa Africa for working with us on this,” Motaung said.

Another member of the committee, Khaya Kraai was one of the residents who spent a week camping outside protecting Pimville Square amid the looting sprees. He explained how he got involved with the initiative.

“I was one of the people who were stationed here, protecting Shoprite. When that was done we asked ourselves how else can we help. The post office has been partially looted, grannies are supposed to get paid soon, so what’s going to happen? that’s when we decided to reach out for help and do something about it,” he said.

Senior citizens who had come to collect their grants were also treated to a soup kitchen by Rofhiwa Africa, who received support from KONKA. Speaking for Rofhiwa, Portia Mackay said her team was proud to be able to serve.

“We normally try to have a soup kitchen for pensioners whenever they are supposed to come to the Post Office to get aid. But we have been really struggling. Thankfully, konka was able to support the soup kitchen through the Pimville Zone 7 committee. We are very proud to be a part of this and are grateful to receive the support we did,” she said.

Pensioner, Thembi Matsoane also heaped praise on the teams involved.

“I was a bit worried but I decided to come and anyways and it was a big relieved find that everything was working so smoothly, so full credit to the organisations that were a part of this,” said the 75-year-old.
