Bara suffers electricity outage, generators overwhelmed

City Power says their technicians are attending to the outage and stated that this is due to cable theft.

Baragwanath Hospital has reported power failure since 00h48 this morning. According to their reports, all generators took load except the S4 Generator for the Paediatric corridor which started up but could not take the load. The Electrical team started it up manually and staggered the load.

The ICU generator ran out of diesel at around 04h05, the electrical teams ensured that it is filled up but could not startup. The electrical team bled the diesel line and restarted the generator at 04h30 and was operating.

After running for 8 hours on generators, diesel tanks became low, ABT and Paediatrics Corridor were without electricity and the electrical team extracted diesel from other areas to fill up empty generators. Unfortunately, the energy center generator is overheating under load and as a result, they had to request for mobile generator.

City Power has issued a statement stating that their technicians are attending to the outage. The power utility said that the outage happened last night due to cable theft which also affected infrastructure downstream and that the hospital will remain off until repairs are done and cable replaced.

“Unfortunately we do not have ETR at the moment, but the team is working hard to ensure it is fixed and restored as soon as possible. We apologise for those affected,” said Isaac Mangena, City Power’s spokesperson.
