Eldorado Park still a Covid-19 hotspot

The environmental health practitioner and Operations Manager for Region G, Gabisile Mbhele shared more information on the cases and what residents can do to remove Eldorado Park from the hotspot list.

Eldorado Park has been second on the list of Covid-19 hotspots in Region G with Lenasia on top. The environmental health practitioner and Operations Manager for Region G, Gabisile Mbhele shared more information on the cases and what residents can do to remove Eldorado Park from the hotspot list.

Starting with some good news, Mbhele shared that the number of Covid-19 cases has been dropping in the community but added that residents still need to remain safe. “There are many people who are raising awareness, there is the Eldorado Park Covid Emergency group which is helping a lot. They are doing a great job in the community,” added Mbhele.

The environmental health practitioner said that the City of Johannesburg’s clinics are doing Covid testing for residents and she feels as though they have been managing well so far. Mbhele explained that the only time that clinics were under pressure was when the number of cases was high but since then, they have been operating well.

“Resident should not let their guard down, I know that now the numbers have dropped and it is level 3, people may start becoming relaxed again and not wear their masks, practice social distancing and start going to visit again. We want people to still be cautious, continue to wash their hands, and get vaccinated.

“When the cases were rising, we noticed that it was a lot of young people from the ages of 16 years old going into their twenties. We were very shocked but we thought maybe they were not taking precautions because they thought that the virus only affects older people. The crèches in the community were also open so there were cases in young children as well,” explained Mbhele.

Schools, churches, and funerals are known to be super-spreaders of the virus. Mbhele added that there should be more education on the virus at schools in the community and residents should make sure that they are also social distancing in public spaces such as the SASSA points, banks, and shopping centres.
