Power cuts still torment Pimville

Despite several protests, various social media outcries, Pimville's electricity crisis does not seem close to an end.

Despite several protests, various social media outcries, Pimville’s electricity crisis does not seem close to an end.

Residents were left in the dark for days last week. Zone 1, 2, 3 and some parts of Zone 4 were hard hit by power outages. Through its social media, Eskom said these were scheduled blackouts as technicians conducted maintenance. However, the blackouts were only scheduled for a few hours, not days.

Zone 1 resident Katlego Morena said he was disappointed

“At this point, we are not even surprised. It’s been 2 days now with power coming and going. This thing happens in winter where many are sick. Not to mention the pandemic. Eskom doesn’t care at all,” he said.

On Friday morning, Eskom communicated again that technicians were attending a power outage in the area. Residents said they are gatvol with the neglect.

“They (Eskom) just have a problem with us. There is no other explanation why out of every township here we suffer from outages and there seem to be no solutions in sight. Just here in Sun Valley it’s been more than a year without electricity, they keep saying they are waiting for material, for how long?” said Zone 4 resident, Kabelo Motaung.

Responding to questions on frequent power cuts in Pimville. Eskom said the outages were mostly caused by damage to infrastructure, vandalism and cable theft.

“Power outages in Pimville are as a result of network overloads from illegal connections, meter bypasses and tampering, unauthorised operations, vandalism and theft of electrical equipment.

“All these lead to the electricity infrastructure (minisubs and transformers) failures and explosions,” Eskom said.

“Cable theft is more prevalent in Pimville. We urge members of the public to report such incidents and all electricity-related illegal activities as these (as it is evident in the area) interfere with the reliability and quality of supply. Illegal electricity-related activities can be anonymously reported on the Eskom Crime-Line number: 0800 11 27 22.”
