After the looting of malls and shops, followed the attempts for damage control, cleaning up the mess as well as picking up the pieces of what is left, however, the real struggle to survive began.

For residents of Diepkloof, Orlando, Noordgesig to be precise, grocery shopping was no longer a convenient as Bara Mall, Blackchain Centre, Diepkloof Square, and other local big shops were looted, let alone the struggles to find ATMs to withdraw money, petrol stations with ATMs are currently experiencing long queues. We can all agree that these malls and shops were convenient for take-away food on a lazy to cook day or when there are electricity outages.

We spoke to some residents to ask them how this has affected them.

“Doing my shopping, I could walk to Diepkloof Square, but now I have to take two taxis to Maponya Mall, or go to Southgate and go face long queues, it is an inconvenience,” said Grace Selolo.

“Whenever I find an ATM that has money, I always make sure that I withdraw enough, because you are not guaranteed to find money at these ATMs all the time so I walk around with a lot of cash, which is not safe,” said Prudence Seraga.

“We have experienced a lot of electricity outages and before the looting spree, Diepkloof Square was at our convenience for takeaway food, we were spoiled for choice. Our local restaurants are selling delicious meals but sometimes you just want something different,” said Tebatso Selolo.

This was also strenuous for nearby Malls, such as Southgate and Maponya Mall, but there seems to be some sort of relief as the Shoprite Group opens its doors again, these included the Jabulani Mall Shoprite which re-opened its doors last week and this past Saturday, July 31, Shoprite Noordgesig also officially welcomed shoppers.
