Livumile Icamagu soup kitchen serves over 200 Klipspruit kids

Co-founder of the foundation, Boniswa Banjathwa said after the impact of covid and the recent looting sprees that hit Soweto, it was important that local NGOs try and help communities.

The Livumile Icamagu Foundation (LIF) teamed up with Onions&All Restaurant to organise a soup kitchen day for kids in the informal settlement of Emagandagandeni in Klipspruit on Saturday.

Co-founder of the foundation, Boniswa Banjathwa said after the impact of covid and the recent looting sprees that hit Soweto, it was important that local NGOs try and help communities.

“Today we decided to dedicate this day to the children of this area. The area is isolated and excluded from the rest of the township and that’s why we identified it as an area where we want to help out. I think it’s important for us as well other organisations to reach out to communities like this one. Especially considering the covid pandemic, job losses and the recent lootings,” she said.

More than 200 children were served breakfast meals, treated to a mini football tournament before being served lunch. The meals were prepared by the Icamagu team in partnership with Tshepo Moeti, a Co-founder of Onions&All Restaurant in Pimville.

“For us, it’s only an honour to be here. I’m here as both Onions&All because we are all about the community, and I’m also here as a chef because contribution does not always have to be financial: you can contribute with your skills. These are proper meals, these are meals we would normally cook for customers but today we decided that let’s cook them for the kids,” he explained.

Puleng Nkoane, a resident at the settlement said the area had also been hard hit by the closure of shops following the looting sprees.

“We struggled, even to get something as simple as bread because even local tuckshops were closed. You would have to go far just to prepare a meal for the kids. I am happy and grateful that there are people who remembered that there are underprivileged kids who need the extra help, not all the kids here but there are certainly those who really needed these meals,” she said.

Banjathwa concluded by thanking the people who had contributed to the day.

“Seeing the kids smiling and laughing after their meals is fulfilling for us and what we aim to achieve, But we must thank especially Onions&All for the amount of support they have given to us and other foundations in the area. I also want to thank the Livumile Icamagu team of volunteers who gave their time and effort to see this day a success,” she said.
