All computers at Kliptown DLTC looted

While the Kliptown DLTC is out of function, MEC Jacob Mamabolo did provide an estimation on when residents can expect the centre to be back up and running.

All computers at the Kliptown Driver’s Learner Testing Centre (TLTC) were looted earlier this week.

This was confirmed by MEC for Public Transport and Road Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo on Friday morning.

The MEC was on an oversight visit to assess the damage done to businesses and infrastructure around Walter Sisulu Square, as well as join residents and community leaders in a clean-up of the area.

“With regards to the DLTC, I must say that all the computers, all the valuable items inside the DLTC have been stolen,” confirmed Mamabolo.

“The damage is quite severe, in a sense that the center has shut down, it is not functioning. The windows were destroyed, both inside and outside the DLTC, so we have seen massive destruction right inside. They (looters) have left a trail of damage inside.”

Soweto was rocked by looting sprees between Sunday and Tuesday. In Kliptown several businesses near Walter Sisulu Square were looted and infrastructure was damaged.

While the MEC could not provide specific dates and the exact extent of the damage as investigations are ongoing, he said his team would work hard to ensure that the centre is back up and running in two weeks.

“We have to work very hard to make sure that we resume the functions here. That (re-installations of computers) should not take us more than a week. So I can say to the residents that use this centre that within a week we should have everything, and then we can make a decision on whether we are ready to open. We will then make another announcement next Sunday,” he said.
