Housing MMC opens a case of fraud after fake account and info on social media

Joburg Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing, Mlungisi Mabaso has on Friday, July 9 opened a case of fraud at the Joburg Central Police Station.

Joburg Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing, Mlungisi Mabaso has on Friday, July 9 opened a case of fraud at the Joburg Central Police Station (John Foster) following a fake social media account created using his name and the Department of Housing to scam vulnerable citizens who desperately need RDP houses.

In a post circulating on social media platforms, the perpetrator claimed that the City of Joburg Housing Department is looking for people who applied for RDP houses in 1996-2000 for Fleurhof RDP houses allocation. The perpetrator allegedly registered a cellphone number fraudulently and requested money from the vulnerable citizens for these RDPs.

Mabaso said that he learned about this fake account and wrong information when residents started calling his office to enquire about the alleged housing allocations.

“I opened a case of fraud at the Joburg Central Police Station and I would like to urge the residents not to entertain such fake posts. I want to make it clear to our residents that like the city, we are not looking for people who applied for RDP houses in 1996-2000 and we do not request for money when doing allocations as RDP houses are free,” Mabaso said.

“I urge residents to be careful and not entertain these criminals, because these are scammers who are just out to rob our poor residents as they are vulnerable and may easily fall victims to such criminal activities,” Mabaso added.
