Protests affect Eskom services

Eskom in Gauteng announced on Sunday that it was temporarily suspending services due to protests that were reported in parts of the province.

Eskom in Gauteng announced on Sunday that it was temporarily suspending services due to protests that were reported in parts of the province. According to a statement from the power utility, no work can justify exposing Eskom employees and property to danger.

“The safety of our employees and contractors remains our number one priority and a major concern and it is with that that we have decided to suspend all services that will require our employees and contractors to enter areas that will put their lives at risk,” reads a statement from Eskom.

This announcement is expected to affect many residents of Soweto who have been without electricity for weeks now. Residents of Protea Glen Extention 12 and White City have for weeks been waiting for Eskom to replace damaged transformers and restore power for them.

With protests and looting spreading across the country and Soweto, residents who don’t have electricity might have to wait a little longer. “Customers who have logged faults are requested to be patient as they might experience delays in response time to resolve their faults,” said Eskom in a statement. “We will monitor the situation and attend to network faults affecting significant areas and also supplies to critical installations, such as hospitals but not at the expense of the safety of our employees and contractors.”
