Dieploof Shoprite Liquor Store looted

Diepkloof has not been spared from the looting chaos at malls and businesses that’s happening in South Africa over the past few days.

Diepkloof has not been spared from the looting chaos at malls and businesses that’s happening in South Africa over the past few days as chaotic protests erupted and resulted in looting and damage to property.

The violence erupted in Kwazulu-Natal last week following the arrest of former president Jacob Zuma and the protests are apparently linked to that, demanding that Zuma be released from jail and the protest have since spread to Johannesburg as well as parts of Soweto.

Shoprite Liquor Store in Diepkloof was on Monday afternoon looted, hundreds of people entered the store illegally and started taking alcoholic beverages and some were spotted attempting to sell this stolen alcohol in the streets.

The liquor store is based less than a kilometre away from the Diepkloof SAPS, however, at the time Soweto Urban was there, there was no police visibility. Diepkloof SAPS spokesperson Phephi Matlou alleged that the police managed to arrest some of the looters after the looting was reported. Police officers seem outnumbered and overwhelmed and little could be done from their side to stop the looting from taking place. Southgate Mall was also looted.

It seems more liquor stores are targeted. meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended bans on alcohol sales and said that the country will remain on alert level 4, well, it seems alcohol will be accessed illegally anyway.

Diepkloof Square had closed all its shops as off Monday morning, Rea Vaya commuters also had to look for an alternative mode of transport as the bus rapid transit system temporarily suspended services due to protests.
