Look out for Kliptown’s new young drivers

"We know that in today’s world’s a driver’s license is an essential tool in finding employment opportunities and so this is a project that we are very proud of," - Thapelo Siasia.

The Kliptown Youth Program’s (KYP) matric class of 2020 recently received their driver’s licenses. The initiative was part of the KYP’s Driver Licence programme to help develop skills that would upskill and help learners in finding employment opportunities. This was according to the programme’s Vocational Development Manager, Thapelo Siasia.

“We wanted to equip our learners with the skills to be employable. We know that in today’s world’s a driver’s license is an essential tool in finding employment opportunities and so this is a project that we are very proud of,” said Siasia.

Since the project started, driving lessons have been done at no cost to the learners. Siasia said this year in particular was especially important because families were struggling due to the covid – 19 pandemic.

“The financial burden that has been relieved from the parents is a huge one. Especially with this group because we know how hard families have been hit by this pandemic. We have received a great response from parents just expressing gratitude and that is why we are proud to be able to do this for the youth of Kliptown,” he added.

The project was funded by German organisation Hundertprozent, Siasia expressed gratitude.

“In terms of support we have struggled locally and most of our help has from outside the country. We are very grateful to Hunderprozent from Germany that has fully supported this initiative. It has made a huge impact on the lives of these kids,” he explained.

2020 matriculant Asanda Dyan was one of the project’s beneficiaries.

“I did my matric last year with KYP and I was grateful to get a chance to do my licence as well. We know that driver’s licences are expensive so this was a great opportunity and will open many doors for us. Thank you to KYP and Hundertprozent,” concluded Dyan.
