Ntokozo ‘Makatani’ Mohlala(24) released an EP relating his life journey

Makatani describes his unique sound as a fusion of old-school concussed drum groove and amapiano.

Meet Ntokozo ‘Makatani’ Mohlala, a 24-year-old talented producer from Diepkloof. Makatani has released an EP relating his life journey, however, what caught our attention in his EP is his single titled Dunu Dunu which means bending over in English, which he says is a vibey song to make people dance.

“Music is all about telling stories and struggles that people will relate to but at the same time feel good about. So, Dunu Dunu was made to bring Amapiano lovers together and make them dance. It features Soloh who is an upcoming vocalist. We wanted something that will be catchy and relevant at the same time. As Africans, siyadunusa (we bend over) when we dance so we wanted that to stand out of everything,” Makatani says.

His love for music started at a young age and he later took it to the next level by studying towards a music-related course majoring in studio sound engineering and music business.

“I won’t lie, the journey has been tough, from being a kid writing lyrics and rhymes of favourite songs to being a certified producer, recording engineer and sometimes a music business consultant giving out advises and sharing knowledge with fellow independent artists and producers on ways they can benefit from all the hard work they put out,” he says.

“I remember walking from Diepkloof to Freedom Park to record every only for the songs to not be released because the producer decided to put someone they thought was better on instrumentals. Anyway, they say ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’, today I am the man I am because of those struggles.”

Makatani describes his unique sound as a fusion of old-school concussed drum groove and amapiano. He says through his EP titled I am Makatani, one of the things we wanted to achieve was to empower women and make them feel good about who they are.

“My Ep is a documented 6 track offering that talks about my life, empowering women, and touches a bit on my religious beliefs. It was the best way to officially introduce myself in the industry and to my fans,” he concludes.
