Nomcebo Zikode foundation aims to help disadvantaged children

Zikode mentioned that the motivation behind the starting of the foundation was seeing so many children growing up in poverty and not having anything.

Songwriter and singer of the global hit single Jerusalema has started a foundation to help disadvantaged children. A media briefing event that introduced the foundation and the partners to the public took place at The Venue Houghton Hotel on June 9.

The Nomcebo Zikode Foundation has partnered with Aidonic a Swiss company and DRIP a South African shoe brand. The CEO of LIV village was also among the partners to honor Zikode for her work and give the foundation a donation of R125 000.

Zikode mentioned that the motivation behind the starting of the foundation was seeing so many children growing up in poverty and not having anything.

“Jerusalem has broken so many records, and I want someone who is listening to me to know that it is possible despite where you come from. You can also do it as a black child, I also managed to do it despite growing up in a poor home all you need is to believe in yourself and never give up,” Zikode said.

Different members of the entertainment industry were there in support of her initiative.

“A foundation is where the heart is, it tells us about you as a person so supporting Nomcebo on this initiative is about sisterhood and believing in what she believes in,” Sophie Ndaba said.

The event ended with Zikode singing her famous Jerusalema hit and celebrating four hundred million views on Youtube and Deborah Fraser who she calls her mother-in-law’s birthday.

“I know how hard it is growing up in a disadvantaged home so this is my way of helping those kids who are growing up in the same environment as I did so they don’t feel uncomfortable and judged when they at school. We not just going to help them once but we will keep them in our database and frequently check upon them,” said Zokode.

She concluded by saying that the foundation is going to focus on disadvantaged kids from the whole continent and not just South Africa. We need to love each other there are so many children who kill themselves and we need to help them despite their gender.
