Ms. World Finalist, Deseree Oliphant is helping young African designers get a chance to showcase their talent. Oliphant is collaborating with designer Ethin Afrique to support young talented designers across Johannesburg townships.

“I have a great passion for writing with young people and so, and wanted something that would go beyond youth month and continue to positively impact the lives of young people. I could say I learned the importance of helping young people from raising my children – I understand the challenges they face” Oliphant said of her involvement.

Subject to covid regulations and changes in levels as prescribed by the government, Afrique is looking to host a fashion show on Mandela Day, July 18 and another one on Women’s Day later this year. Ten lucky young designers will, through collaboration with Afrique, have their designs showcased on these shows.

“Designing the send-off designer jacket, matching scarf and mask for a Ms. World 2021 Finalist, before her departure to Miami, is just the start to what we have in store for the youth of communities in Kliptown and Soweto,” said Afrique.

Oliphant, who hails from Eldorado Park in Soweto, is the reigning Mrs. United Nations South Africa and was scheduled to represent South Africa at the Ms. World pageant in Miami last year but could not travel due to the covid 19 pandemic. Despite the setback, she is still hopeful that she will be able to attend the prestigious event this year. In the meantime, the Ms. World finalist is fully focused on helping communities.

“I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with many initiatives that involve helping communities. We have had programmes with the SAPS, We have visited many schools both in Soweto and outside just to speak and motivate the youth, so I’m looking forward to continuing that journey. This partnership with Ethan Afrique is a great part of that,” said Oliphant.
