Thulani Thuswa laid to rest in Nasrec

"I stopped having sleepless nights about the media because you were there. You prepared me well,” - Pitso on working with Thulani

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Media Manager, Thulani Thuswa was laid to rest on Friday in Nasrec, just outside Soweto. Thuswa was reportedly involved in a fatal car accident on Sunday morning, June 5 near Sandton.

His memorial service was held at the Nasrec Memorial Park where his funeral would also be held two days later. Both ceremonies were kept small due to covid regulations but fans were allowed to join proceedings via youtube and social media streams.

Speaking at the memorial service, current Ah Ahly Coach Pitso Mosimane, who worked with Thuswa from 2012 to 2019 while at Mamelodi Sundowns, could not hold back the tears. After a few failed attempts, he eventually handed over a speech he had prepared to his wife Moira Mosimane to read.

“It was from your hard work and support that I started understanding media and how they work. I started understanding that not all questions mattered DNA I started understanding how to handle negative queries – and you all know that I faced them every day of my life. I stopped having sleepless nights about the media because you were there. You prepared me well,” Pitso’s speech read.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Captain, Hlompo Kekena said he was still in disbelief.

“I never imagined this day would come, not in my wildest dream,” said a teary Kekana.

Thulani, or ‘Vlad’ as he was affectionately known among his friends, had carved himself a successful career as one of the top media managers in the game. He had cut his teeth under the guidance of Tsietsi Mohale, who took him into his home in Mofolo, Soweto before teaching him how to run a business and sparking his interests in the marketing world.

After getting his qualification in Marketing and Public Relations, the bright ‘Thukzin’ would join Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs under the mentorship of the Motaung family, as part of AmaKhosi’s marketing team.

However, it would be in Pretoria where he would truly rise into his stride. Thuswa joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011 as their media manager. He left Sundowns in 2019 to launch his own talent management company, Tyler Masons Marketing which managed a star-studded list of sports personalities. Thuswa also served in the Local Organizing Committee of the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup.

On Social media and across media publications tributes continue to pour from football clubs, supporters, colleagues, and the football fraternity at large. Thuswa leaves behind his daughter and six siblings.
