Isipho Primary School handed brand-new spectacles

Helping learners see differently.

20 learners with eyesight problems at Isipho Primary School in Dlamini were handed brand-new spectacles. The donation was part of a collaboration by Kaya 959 and Ster-Kinekor Cinemas.

Under the Kaya Cares Back 2 School Campaign, learners at the same school were tested in March this year and those found to have eyesight problems were shortlisted to receive the spectacles.

School principal Nokuthula Dabula said the school was grateful to receive the support.

“No more blurry eyesight, they will see now and that’s a priceless gift, we’re very happy. It started with shoes a while back, we didn’t think it would be way bigger than that. They’ve given these kids a fair chance at an improved learning experience,” Dabula said.

Speaking for Kaya 959, Brand Manager Amu Mathebula explained why the station chose to help Grade 1 learners.

“We have a belief that by the time kids reach the age of 7 their view of the world has formed and it affects their perception of what they can achieve. So that’s why we wanted to make an impact at an early age so that by the time a child reaches high school they know that they can accomplish anything they want,” he said.

The initiative was under Ster-Kinekor’s Vision Mission – an initiative launched in 2005 to help young people with eyesight problems. Speaking for the cinema company, Geraldine Engleman said they wanted to ensure that learners see clearly whilst learning.

“A lot of what you learn is through your eyes and so when we have the opportunity to help young children learn better we’re always proud to do so. We want to make sure that every learner is at least able to see properly while they learn,” said Engleman.

The learners also received meal packs from Meals on Wheels, school shoes donated by Coca- Cola, Takkies from Shoes4Souls, stationary and PPE provided by Kaya Cares.
