Thubelihle Creche shines some light on child protection

Children from Thubelihle Early Childhood Development Centre embarked on a march to create awareness on the issues of child abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation.

The month of May is Child Protection month in South Africa and the first week of June marks the National Child Protection Week an opportunity to bring issues of child abuse and neglect into the spotlight.

As the government called on all South Africans to support Child Protection Week by ensuring that the most vulnerable in our society do not suffer abuse, Thubelihle Early Childhood Development Centre in Diepkloof Zone 6 on Wednesday, June 9 embarked on a peaceful march to raise awareness about the issue of child abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation.

With the current state of the country and what families are going through, the march was necessary. ` Led by the Thubelihle’s principal Ntsiki Qhaba, the march saw the streets of Zone 6 being coloured red, as the children proudly wore their beautiful red uniforms carrying posters and placards with children’s rights written on them, singing songs that promote protective behaviour and how to report abuse. The march was supported by parents.

“As an Early Childhood Development centre we have taken a responsibility to teach these children their rights at this young age. We are teaching them protective behaviours and how to report abuse and this is not only done during Child Protection Week. We also equip and work together with parents to prevent child abuse and neglect,” said Qhaba.

The centre was established in 2019 and Qhaba said so far, they are doing well, however, they still need assistance in a form of sponsorship or donations.
