'The only way to survive is to stay within the colony' - Thembinkosi Gqada.

Artist Thembinkosi Gqada better known by his stage name JayMar from Soweto recently released his Extended Play Record titled ‘Ready to Try’ and has already recorded two other projects as well.

The producer and rapper is the founder of the entertainment label ‘RecGene’.

He released his first free tape project in 2015 while he was doing his final year in high school. In 2017, he was part of a collaborative project with Chaka Dolla and Capital Trouble where he produced most of the project ‘No Fear No Favour’ as Thebza Beatz.

JayMar has also produced influential Chaka Dolla’s song titled ‘Nyaope’ which got acceptance for play on Channel O and Trace Music. “The song Nyaope was inspired by drug abuse and the implications it has in communities we live in. The song encourages all the substance abusers to come into realisation about their wrongs and change their condition,” explained JayMar.

The artist took a four-year-long break from his music because he said that he needed to rediscover himself, his music, and the sound that he wants to introduce within the ‘Kasi rap sub-culture.

“My music is different from others because I totally moved from making traditional Kasi Rap sound to infuse Hip Hop with ambient sounds and chilled LoFi setting but still stay within the sub-culture language of instruction which is Tsotsi Taal or Vernac.

“The message behind my music is community, protection, dreams, future, and redemption, as the influence is taken from Emperor Penguin because no man is an island, the only way to survive is to stay within the colony,” shared JayMar.
