SA’s radio stars team up with Telkom to help communities

The aim being the initiative is to promote African languages while making sure that even the most remote of South Africa’s communities are connected in a language they understand.

Some of South Africa’s most prominent names in the airwaves have teamed up with Telkom to help reach communities.

The initiative, named the Influencer program includes a star-started list that includes some of the biggest names in n the South African airwaves. The aim being the initiative is to promote African languages while making sure that even the most remote of South Africa’s communities are connected in a language they understand.

Last year, Telkom launched the influencer program. The influencers list included Zizo Tshwete, Seipati Twasa Seoke, Dudu Khoza, Selby Mkhize, and Brian Rikhotso. On Wednesday, the telecommunications company revealed 5 more influencers to join the team who join the team this year.

One of them is a radio personality, Khutso Theledi who rose to stardom as a car spinner in Midway, Soweto. She also earned the nickname “Marry Go-Round” during that time. The 31-year-old though is more famously known for being the first female in South African radio to hold down her drive show – The Lady on Drive.

She is joined in the influencers team by other household names in radio and the entertainment industry including, Tumi Morake, Leigh-Anne Williams, and Martelize Brin.

Morake said she was proud to be part of the initiative.

“This has felt like an invitation with a clear mission to accomplish something that is aligned to my beliefs; that people should always be connected. I do it through laughter and Telkom does it through accessible technology. It’s the perfect marriage in my eyes,” Morake said.

ALS radio stations are spread across isiZulu, isiXhosa, Xitsonga, Sesotho, and Setswana as well as Afrikaans and youth-focused radio station – YFM.

“Based on the success of the partnerships we had last year, with personalities from the various ALS radio stations, we are thrilled to expand our relationships to include the Afrikaans speaking community,” said Telkom’s Chief Marketing Officer, Gugu Mthembu.
