Simphiwe Kunene who allegedly faked her kidnapping granted bail

Perjury case postponed for further investigations.

Simphiwe Kunene, who allegedly lied about being hijacked last week appeared at Protea Magistrate court today.

The case was postponed to June 18, 2021, for further investigations. The accused was asked if she has her lawyer or would like Legal Aid to represent her.

She responded by saying that the state can offer her a lawyer and it was stated that should her plea be successful, then Legal Aid will represent her.

The accused was offered a bail amount of R2000 and is to remain in custody until the bail fee is paid.

The 28-year-old was arrested for perjury, defeating the ends of justice and fraud after she reported a false hijacking and made a buzz on social media last week with countless posts reporting about her “kidnap” ordeal.

Kunene posted on her Facebook page that she was hijacked and kidnapped on Wednesday evening. She later on updated that the car had stopped and the kidnappers were arguing about who was going to have sex with her.

Social media users were angry after learning that Simphiwe’s posts were just a prank gone wrong.

The #tags moved from #FindSimphiwe to #ArrestSimphiwe
