Sangweni case faces yet another postponement

Water crisis at Protea Magistrate Court, sees many cases postponed.

The case of Taelo Dipholo and Colleen Sello, who are accused of having allegedly set alight a mentally ill woman, Jostina Sangweni last month faced yet another postponement because the suspects didn’t make it to court.

The prosecutor said that arrangements to bring the two suspects to the court were done late. This is due to the water crises that the Protea Magistrate’s Court has been facing since February 2021 but became intense from last week. The water challenge at hand has caused court cases to be postponed, leaving the family of Sangweni and those who came to support them disappointed.

The Traditional Healer’s Organization along with the family of the deceased didn’t expect the outcome they received at the court on Tuesday, May 18.

“We are not happy that the case was postponed again. We couldn’t attend the case last week due to lack of water inside the court premises, today we are told that the suspects couldn’t make it to court. All we want is justice to prevail and not for the case to drag,” said Makhosi Khumalo.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Jabulani Moagi stated that as a family they are disappointed by Tuesday’s outcome. “Postponements on the case are causing us more grieve, we want to see the case continue and have a way forward. We however still have confidence in the law, believing that at the end justice will be served.”

The case has been postponed to May 26, on that day formal bail applications are expected to take place.
