Alliance Francaise (AF) of Soweto hosted a Disco Soupe, an event that was created in Germany some years ago as a “protest soup” to raise awareness about food waste and climate change.

Based in Diepkloof Extension AF is described by founders as a cultural organisation that aims at promoting France, its language and culture as well as the culture of Francophone countries. It also showcases local artists and musicians on its premises in partnership with local cultural organisations.

“What happens on the day is that we all prepare the food brought to us by NOSH, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) which goes on a daily food rescue mission and redistributes surpluses to those who need it. Participants to the event came from Little Rose Refuge in Kliptown as well as from the Soweto Chefs Academy. They all worked together under the supervision of Chef Brittany,” said Gérald Candelle, Director at AF.

“What transpired on the day was a wonderful team spirit as we all contributed to preparing the food were going to share.

Also, this took place in a very festive atmosphere boosted by the very catchy performance of Soweto-based DJ Nkuli-Kay,” Candelle added.

Due to COVID-19 and its regulations, they could not invite a lot of people, however, those who were not present at the event benefited as the food was later distributed to the community. AF Soweto was established in 1982 and since 1995, it has been located in Diepkloof Extension, Phase 3.

It is part of an international network of more than 800 Alliances throughout 132 countries. Plans include developing French classes and extra-curricular activities in local schools and becoming an active cultural hub for the promotion of Soweto artists. “Our second session of French classes has started; we are inviting the community to join us and have fun while learning French. Also, if you are an artist and you wish to share a project with us, do not hesitate to contact us,” Candelle concluded.
