MMC Mabaso vows to fix Kliptown’s housing crisis

City of Johannesburg Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing, Mlungisi Mabaso has vowed to address housing issues that, after decades, still haunt the people of Kliptown.

City of Johannesburg Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing, Mlungisi Mabaso has vowed to address housing issues that, after decades, still haunt the people of Mabaso said that residents could rest assured that they would see progress in terms of housing developments in the area by the end of this term.

“Kliptown has been on top of our priority list and it will remain one of the top priorities in our programmes,” he said.

“The state of Kliptown is embarrassing and we have to ensure that this township is as great as its history,” Mabaso added.

The 31-year-old MMC was addressing community leaders during the unveiling of Masston Construction Projects as the official contractor that would be tasked with the reblocking in Kliptown Extension 7. The MMC was with a panel that included Ward 25 Councillor Lulama Sibanyoni, Regional Director Moabi Pekane, and IFP’s Chairperson in Gauteng, Bonginkosi Dlamini.

The project is expected to also open up opportunities for the unemployed people in the area. After the unveiling, frustrated Kliptown community leaders had a chance to pose questions to the MMC and his panel.

Among them was the co-founder of the Kliptown Youth Program (KYP), Thanduxolo Bezana, who urged the MMC to make good on his promise.

“We have sat here for years listening to politicians make empty promises. Please let this be the last of promises made to the people of Kliptown, let us take a step forward. Politicians should not only come here when they need votes. Humble your selves, remember who you are and where we come from as a black nation. There are enough resources for everyone in this country, but greed is the problem,” he said.

In response to community leaders, Mabaso also acknowledged the failures of the government.

“I am aware that we, as politicians have lost your trust because of the failures from the government in providing housing. But I will repeat what I have said before, if you are a leader you do not gain trust by talking, you gain trust by doing. So you do not have to trust me, but I know that in the future you will, because of the work that we will do here. If we were not concerned about the conditions for the people of Kliptown, we would not be here,” he said.

Mabaso and his team are expected to return to Kliptown in the coming weeks to address the community and iron out the final details on how the residents would benefit from the project.
