Hillbrow Flats in Eldorado Park in dire need of proper regular maintenance

DA finds that lack of maintenance on flats make living at the flats miserable.

Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) for safety, Nico de Jager, visited the Hillbrow Flats in Eldorado Park with DA Joburg Caucus Chief Whip, Cllr. Wendy Alexander and the DA candidate for Ward 17, Anne Adams.

After years of neglect on the flats there has been many issues with regards to lack of maintenance on the flats. Over the last few years, we have covered stories where residents shared how living conditions have been in their block of flats. Leaking pipes, over-flowing sewage, loose roofs, and damp walls are some of the common issues that residents have complained about.

“When knocking on the door of Mrs. Gwen Nero, we were met by a very desperate 73-year-old lady complaining about the smell and dampness and years of unanswered calls by the Gauteng Provincial Government to maintain its housing stock. These residents are not asking for much; they only want dignity,” said de Jager.

According to the statement made by de Jager, committee member and chairperson for the Hillbrow Flats, Cyril Kuyane said that he would like the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements MEC, Lebogang Maille to see the state of Hillbrow flats for himself, where raw sewage runs past the front door of some residents. There are only three out of eleven security lights that work, while all the windows were broken after the protests in 2020 when Nathaniel Julies was killed. The walls have disintegrated, there is no play area for children, and only one skip bin servicing the 108 residential units of Hillbrow flats.

Residents seem to be giving up hope when it comes to maintaining the flats and many who we have interviewed in the past stated that if they had the money to fix thing themselves they would.
