A call for residents to attend a meeting to discuss the possible new housing plan in Eldorado Park

The Greater Eldorado Park Civic Association speaks on housing.

The Greater Eldorado Park Civic Association led by Donne Reece is calling residents from Eldorado Park to a meeting at the grounds opposite Cavendish Primary School in Eldorado Park Extension 6. The meeting will be held on May 8 at 12 pm.

About six years ago, the City of Johannesburg (COJ) summoned Reece to court after the association started a movement where residents were grabbing the land illegally in extension 6.

That same land now is being reviewed for the proposed Eldorado Park Extension 6 Housing Development located on ERF 6459. The land is being reviewed K2M Environmental after the Gauteng Provincial Government approved the Gauteng Rapid Land Release Programme which is aimed at fast-tracking the provision of high-density residential units (flats) to qualifying residents.

“They want to build 506 flats in our community. We do not want flats; we want stands rather where we can build our homes. Flats are supposed to be temporary. We cannot build on in a flat, at least with a house, we can always extend or build at the back for our family,” said Renèè Louw, a concerned resident from Eldorado Park.

The association is also not happy with the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) which was released a few weeks ago. Reece indicated that there is no budget allocated to Eldorado Park as the other areas have.

“Government should be consistent throughout the years, not just come into the areas because they want votes during the elections. They wait for the elections to come and then suddenly they want to come with projects. The government has not delivered a house since 2014 in Eldorado Park,” said Reece.

The association would like residents to come with copies of their C-form so that they can add it to their database. They are also calling residents to discuss the rapid land release programme and to find out how residents feel about it.

The Greater Eldorado Park Civic Association would also like to invite residents to a meeting in Jackson Drift that will be on May 16 which will be about heritage and housing.
