Deputy Minister of Social Development hands over PPEs to ECDs in Soweto

Ms. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, concluded her campaign of handing over Personal Protective Equipment’s (PPEs) at Ebenezer Child Development Program at Braamfischerville.

Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ms. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, concluded her campaign of handing over Personal Protective Equipment’s (PPEs) on Friday, April 30 at Ebenezer Child Development Program at Braamfischerville. On that day she handed over PPEs to Ebenezer Child Development Program and other five beneficiaries within the area of Soweto.

The campaign was done in partnership with the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and eSimphiwe Childcare Centre and is aimed at assisting ECDs in disadvantaged communities to comply with COVID 19 regulations.

“This initiative is aimed at creating sustainable livelihood and assisting ECD Centres in disadvantaged communities to comply with COVID-19 regulations and to enable the centres to open doors for children with no worries of not having enough PPEs which might hinder them from adhering to the adjusted level 1 rules and regulations,” Said the Deputy Minister.

During her PPEs handover, the deputy minister advised ECDs not to use sanitizers with alcohol ingredients on children, since many caregivers are unaware of the very high alcohol content present in alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which can contain up to 60% to 95% alcohol which is not good for children as they might consume them. She also advised that sanitizers be kept out of the kitchen as they are flammable.

“The Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu traveled across the country from March 9, 2021, along with eSimphiwe Child Care Centre, distributing PPEs to all ECD centres built in partnership with the NLC. This was done to enable them to meet the norms and standards issued by the department for ECD centres to reopen under the national state of disaster,” said Lucky Sitathi, Director of eSimphiwe child Care Centre at Richmond.

To date, 127 centres and over 5000 children attending ECDs and 680 practitioners across the country have benefitted from this initiative.
